11 Comments have been left
Official Title: To ensure that women seeking an abortion receive an ultrasound and the opportunity to review the ultrasound before giving informed consent to receive an abortion.
Sponsor: Rep Jordan (R, OH)
Date: 01/23/2012
Summary:
Ultrasound Informed Consent Act - Amends the Public Health Service Act to require abortion providers, before a woman gives informed consent to any part of an abortion, to perform an obstetric ultrasound on the pregnant woman, provide a simultaneous explanation of what the ultrasound is depicting, display the ultrasound images so the woman may view them, and provide a complete medical description of the images, including the dimensions of the embryo or fetus, cardiac activity if present and visible, and the presence of external members and internal organs if present and viewable. Prohibits construing this Act to require a woman to view the images or penalizing the provider or the woman if she declines to look at the images. Exempts an abortion provider if the abortion is necessary to save the life of a mother whose life is endangered by a physical disorder, physical illness, or physical injury, including a life-endangering physical condition caused by or arising from the pregnancy itself. Requires the provider to include in the woman's medical file a truthful and accurate certification of the specific medical circumstances that support such determination. Authorizes the Attorney General to commence a civil action in federal court against any abortion provider who knowingly violates this Act. Prescribes penalties. Directs the Attorney General to notify the appropriate state medical licensing authority of penalties assessed. Authorizes a woman upon whom an abortion has been performed in violation of this Act to commence a civil action against the provider for actual and punitive damages.

Thumbs DownIt is amazing how the republicans scream about deregulation of business but when it comes to people they want to place more regulations. They want to tell us who we can marry, restrict or right to have labor contracts but yet allow executives to continue to have lavish clauses in theirs, tell us how we can die, I.e. Terri Schiavo. The Terri law is yet another pathetic example of the republican party trying to tell us how we can live or die. What happened to our health care privacy? They screamed about the "death council", a lie they created about the health care bill but want to intrude on a woman's health choices. These are just a few of the latest examples of the republican war not just on women but on individual rights!

Thumbs DownIt's amazing how women KNOW when they are going to have sex with a man. They KNOW that there is a chance of becoming pregnant. They KNOW that when a woman is WITH CHILD her body is SHARED with a responsibility on the part of the CARRIER of the CHILD to PROTECT LIFE. Yet.....how convenient it is of the women that become pregnant through MAJORLY CONSENSUAL sexual intercourse, with the afore mentioned KNOWLEDGE of the CHANCE they may become pregnant, all of a sudden view the unborn child as "fetal tissue" and not a HUMAN LIFE at all. For the most part those that abort their child and those that support them are of the same cloth. Self-serving, selfish, me me me-ers who never REALLY grew up and don't really want to. As for the BARBARIC ruling by the courts back in the 70's that started this horrific tragedy in America.....it was all a very financially and social engineering motivated decision...thinly disguised as a way to "champion women's rights". Additionally it was MEN that actually gave the GREATER weight to the so-called victory of Roe v Wade. I guess with the great emasculation of America and the seeming increase in testosterone in American women...the "men" are still ensuring that the US keeps killing its children.

Thumbs DownThe purpose of this act is really to prevent abortion, by psychologically manipulating these women. I agree with Maranda302 that there are several situations that lead to an abortion, and this should be considered, but for the most part - this act is harsh and puts so much guilt on women who are making a decision about their own body - regardless of the circumstances.

Thumbs DownI dont believe force should be necessary but I do believe it should be in line of sight. I understand there are many different situations that can be involved for a women to get an abortion, stupid drunken black outs or worse, rape. But there are those women that use abortions as birth control and I think that seeing it puts a realness to the situation and may deter or help women learn from their actions.

Thumbs DownThere is absolutely no reason to force a woman to view an ultrasound if she doesn't want to. This is manipulative and despicable!

Thumbs DownThere is no reason to force a woman to HAVE an ultrasound if she doesn't want it--other than the obvious $$$ payoff to providers and a manipulation of women's rights to choose what to do with her own body.
